About the Artist

Take a walk through the forest...trees are the best listeners and they never feel the need to offer their opinion. Rattle away and play on. Prance and dance, drag your feet and reflect. Drip tears on the dirt, and nature doesn't mind. It is everything and all encompassing. It grounds us and houses us even when we ignore it. These are precious and trivial findings that inspire and devastate.
Catherine's childhood home was a creative place, where art and theatre were interchangeable bedfellows. Both require the complicity of play and observation, each with their own unique fluid language. They are reflective of the people behind the creation and the world around us. Catherine chose to focus on theatre, and took the art with her to Paris, France, where she studied at the International École du Théâtre Jacques Lecoq. École Lecoq is a universe of devised theatre, developed from original creations, characters and improvisation, inspired, perhaps, by specific stories, themes or pre-existing texts or works of art. She also studied the architecture of scenography with the Laboratoire d’Étude du Mouvement, under Pascale Lecoq. The language of visual drama, or art, and theatre is the same. We may not have words or language written on a painting, but the way we experience and interpret it is similar. We sense when there is no story, and something falls flat. We are moved by the right amount of contrast and tension! Scenography is akin to composition and can either support or deplete the drama. Whether inspired by the expanse of nature or the dynamics of human relationships, Catherine seeks to keep moving and playing and discovering her place in this world, in spite of conflict. As her children grow up, and her brain has more space, she finds herself wandering in creative exploration, returning to visual art.
